I just saw Neutral Milk Hotel here in October. I didn't really know them other than the one song, but my girlfriend was a huge fan, so I took her. They put on one of the best live shows I've seen. They were fantastic. They made me a fan.
I'd rather they don't headline because I just saw them here, but there could be worse bands.

They are playing a week before (I think) in Columbus. I wouldn't like them as a headliner though

They have a really devoted fan base, but I think the average music fan/concert-goer is not familiar enough to get excited by them and buy tickets.

You think their fanbase is that much different than The National? I think there is a lot of overlap, but that NMH is quite a bit more under the radar than the National. Most of my friends who are your average music listeners (not music fanatics) have never even heard of NMH, but they are at least familiar with The National. When NMH came to Madison Theatre last year most people I told about the show had no idea who they were. In music nerd and indie rock circles NMH is legendary... to the average person they are mostly unknown. Also, The National was just nominated for a Grammy, so there's an obvious spotlight on them on the national stage (no pun intended).

NMH are probably playing Forecastle anyway. But that show at the Madison sold out in less than 10 minutes.

NMH are probably playing Forecastle anyway. But that show at the Madison sold out in less than 10 minutes. I think the speed of that sell out had a lot to do with the fact that they hadn't played a show in 10 years. Also, not that it makes much difference... the show sold out in 4.5 hours. It went on sale at 10 AM and sold out around 2:30 PM I'm not in any way trying to belittle NMH, I just think that if you asked everyone who went to Bunbury the last two years about NMH, you'd be surprised by the number of people who didn't know them. I think they'd be a great addition to the festival, but I'm not sold on them being big enough to headline.

I'm having a REALLY hard time coming up with anything realistic. Maybe Jack Johnson on Friday and Modest Mouse on Sunday?

I still think Afghan Whigs will be in there somewhere. Are they big enough to headline though? I think they bring a big local crowd but not sure it would be up to what the headliners last year brought.
I would love Modest Mouse.
Maybe Beck? He's playing a few shows and is playing Pitchfork Festival in Chicago the following weekend.
Of course there is still the chance for Outkast. I know they are probably playing Forecastle the next weekend, but who knows whether they are able to do both now that they are on different weekends.

i don;t think the Afghan Whigs are big enough to headline and if they do it will hurt ticket sales. I mean if you look them up on youtube their most popular videos have like 150,000 views. Not saying they don't appeal to the hipsters which I assume is the target audience for this festival based on past lineups. Someone like cage the elephant I think would be a good healiner and in the price range of the event.

I wouldn't underestimate the draw that Afghan Whigs have in Cincinnati. Also I don't think they'd play unless they headline.

gross...hate Neutral Milk Hotel....they'd be like MGMT all over again- SNOOZE FEST. actually MGMT's performance and lackluster demeanor made me go from Fan to nonfan. you would have thought we were torturing them by making them go up there. no crowd interaction, no energy, NOTHING. only other time that has happened for me was Mazzy Star in 1994.
and the National is great- energetic, powerful music, stellar crowd interaction. that was the 3rd time I saw them live and they're almost better live than recorded. comparing them to NMH for me is insulting. i compare them more to Mudhoney- another overrated 90's band i never got
