I saw some "Keep Bunbury on the River" signs on Sunday, and wanted to see what people thought.
I love the current atmosphere. Between the river, the downtown skyline, and our two good looking bridges, the ambiance is something that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the country. The location for most of the well known festivals is somewhere iconic, and the current setting has that. Also, now that they've moved the main stage to the west side of the park, I do really like the layout in that you can get between any of the stages in <5 min and grab a beer on the way.
That being said, if they try to grow the festival much beyond what they did this year, I think it will be hard to do without a relocation. With both of the main stages, it's landlocked because the park isn't really wide enough to get around them and have anything meaninful behind them with good accessibility. They probably could add a few more bands without adding stages - Sunday felt a bit stretched at times.
The one move I could see making sense is to Summit Park in Blue Ash, given that is where they moved Buckle Up. I don't see them leaving the city because that just seems like a great way to alienate your fan base and force a rebuild of Bunbury's image in general. The Enquirer article mentioned that they moved Buckle Up there because it could accommodate larger crowds, so it would meet one need. Also, from a purely financial perspective, I have to think that stage set-up & tear down is a pretty significant chunk of change given the work involved... so getting to use the stage twice before you tear it down seems like a smart move. That being said, I also don't think the neighbors of Blue Ash would be very keen on sets like Snoop, whose set apparently generated noise complaints as far as 3-5 miles north of downtown.
I hope the festival stays where it is... but we'll see what happens...
