I'm on the fence about VIP. Obviously, the lineup will play a determining factor, but if I'm not doing VIP, I want to get early bird tickets tonight. Has anyone done VIP and can tell me if it's worth the price difference?
The other factor is one day of the fest, we might have our 3yo with us. I know the stipulations say he's free into the fest, but would need VIP tickets to go in with us. Anyone know how strict they were on that? I wouldn't want to have to buy VIP for the weekend for him to just be with us one day.

They are strict about children in the VIP. I wrote this on reddit about VIP, hopefully doesn't offend anyone but it's pretty true: I've been VIP the last two years. It's worth it if like the others have said you MUST see your favorite band up close, want cheap drinks, and want a clean bathroom. The private performances, IMO, are ok. It gets really crowded if there's anyone good (Like Twenty One Pilots last year) but if it's a nobody, the VIP is annoying because the people don't shut the eff up. The second VIP area at the second main stage was nice to have as well but it was 3 times smaller and was an absolute shit-show during the Twenty One Pilots set (lots of entitled people thinking that they didn't have to wait in VIP with the rest of the people THAT PAID FOR VIP TOO). I got to see The Decemberists front row and I could have died right there a happy man. I thought they goofed a bit with VIP last year. The "extra viewing area on the side" was bullshit. Two years ago they setup tons of lawnchairs to chill in and you were up on a slight hill so you could see over the crowd through the chain link fence. Last year, for some ungodly reason, they removed the chairs and hung advertisements all over the fence and you couldn't see anything. I made a stink on Twitter and with the attendants that they ruined the "extra viewing area" and forced the VIPers to get really aggressive during the headliners. They took them down the last day, hopefully they learn from it. Still no lawn chairs though. I liked the concierge service too. They didn't charge extra (except a tip if you were inclined) and these lovely people would run to any food/drink booth in the festival and get you food. They got to skip the line. So that was awesome. Also as mentioned before, the little extras like sunscreen and bug spray were cool. I didn't get a massage (i didn't feel right having some poor person rub my sweaty body). Another cool thing is the semi-celebrities you'll run into. Josh Hutchinson, Nick Lachey, the guitarist and bass player from Walk the Moon, they all hung around the VIP and were friendly (accept Hutchinson, he hid behind a bodyguard mostly and hung by himself, still took a picture with us though). Rant: Here's what you'll notice the most about VIP: The entitled attitude, and the bands definitely notice. Generally, the people in VIP have money or status and they act like it. They don't really care about the music (except for the headliners) so when they wander down to the front of the stage, they YACK YACK YACK YACK the whole friggin time you're trying to listen to a band. And they don't give a shit about festival protocol...if you show up late, you don't get to squeeze to the front right? Wrong, they do what they want. Want to make a drink run during the set? Sure! Why not? Act like you own the place and push your way back up. Like I said, the bands notice, big time. They see these people being all chit-chatty and not giving a shit so the band ignores VIP. I watched so many bands refuse to acknowledge the VIP...lead singers crowd surfing in the general admission areas, walking past VIP to get to the real fans. I was annoyed by that (not the bands fault) because my stupid VIP counter parts acted like this was a corporate retreat and boozed their way into oblivion while some of the best bands of the day owned the stage. There were some AWESOME VIP people that were like me, having a great time and maxing out their entertainment budget for the year. Those people I loved. They introduced a "super" VIP this year thats like three times as costly, maybe entitled folk will move on to that. /rant For me and my fiance, we are going general admission this year. For one, we have to pay for a wedding so cash is tighter, and two, we missed the fun of the "regular" people. So many of our friends wanted to meet up and see bands and we were like "sorry, gotta run back to the VIP". And we mostly only watched the bigger acts. I really missed the undercard because I was worried about getting my monies worth. Oh, also make note that you can't take drinks out of the VIP area. They don't want you doing beer runs for people outside. Kind of sucked because I would have liked to grab a beer after a set at the main stage to take over to the river stage and watch a different band. I think it's worth doing at least once...and I would determine that based on the lineup. If you love most of the lineup, go for it. Just be aware that VIP sold out last year a couple of days after the lineup announcement so don't delay. We weren't planning on doing VIP again last year because of the price but then they announced 6 or 7 bands that we were in love with last year so we had to.

All of this is great! Thank you! Bummer about them being strict on the kids in VIP. It looks like we'll either have to forego VIP the day we have him, or try to make other arrangements for him.
I do wonder if the ultimate VIP will filter some of those people out. I really want to do it, but fuck, it's an extra $500.

VIP is GREAT!!! "Worth it" is tough. I am not sure if I would do Bunbury without it, but I've only been twice and have done VIP both times. The tricky part is making it worthwhile. The addition of the 2nd stage VIP area sounds awesome because the years I went it was only the main stage. Still awesome, but made it hard to skip around as much because I always felt like I needed to be at VIP as much as possible to maximize the "value".
The small tent VIP shows are GREAT! HOWEVER, they are smack dab in the middle of a lot of the "middle tier" type bands that are the reason I love Bunbury. The small tent shows are only around 15 minutes and often get pushed back or delayed....etc. This makes it SUPER hard to choose and jump around to different stages.
The main factor for me, with VIP comes down to the headliners and the "upper tier" bands. If there are enough of those that you like and haven't seen then YES, it is WAY worth it. You can saunter up to the front of just about ANY band. Even the headliner you can get the equivalent of 9 rows back at any given point. Its pretty awesome.

My wife didn't have vip the year we took our boys and as mentioned in another thread she isn't "quite" so into music so she waled around with them more and I met up at breaks in the action. They weren't there too long and we had a sitter lined up for later that evening

Yeah, I've never seen them do single day VIP. If you strike up convo with security you can sometimes get away with a little bit more. Also if it is REALLY early up until the last 2-3 bands on the main stages you will have better luck too.

So since there is a second VIP area now, did they do away with the VIP band sets?

They advertised it as a feature for buying the tickets. Might be worth complaining about. But seriously, I only saw one private show last year and it was the singer from Twenty One Pilots. It was so jam packed and he did two songs on the uke and peaced out. The other performances weren't interesting

I haven't had any issues at all. It's been a great fest so far.
If anyone is in VIP, I'm wearing a "drinks well with others" shirt. Hubs has a gray OSU shirt on. Say hi!

Since the most recent posts are from before the 2016 fest, I'm wondering if there are any updates to any of this. Have they changed anything with the viewing areas? Are the lawn chairs back? Or is there a place to plop a blanket down and have a good view? It says there are lockers with charging stations on a first come, first serve basis - are there like...5 of them? Or will we have a pretty good shot at getting one even if we're not there at doors open? I am a little worried about the comments about how people are in the VIP viewing sections, but I'm guessing there's not a whole lot they could do to change that, soo I'm guessing that's all about the same, which is a bummer. People who scream at each other through shows is like...my number one peeve. Like...1. Why are you even here? and 2. You're ruining my experience with this show. So incredibly rude.
Have they improved on the food? I think I saw another review somewhere that the food would come out only at certain times, lines for it were insane, and they might even be out of it by the time you got there. Have they improved this? My husband is a type 1 diabetic, so this is kind of an important aspect of the VIP for us!
Any input on what to expect from our VIP tickets is welcomed :-) Thanks all!

It was definitely your post from a couple years back! I really appreciate the detailed descriptions and info! You were saying you weren't doing VIP that year for various reasons (would have been the 2016 fest). And I take it you didn't in 2017 then either. Are you this year? Just curious! It wouldn't have changed our decision to do VIP, there are too many reasons it is MUCH better for us. I'm just in that phase where I kind of want to prep for what to expect. I'm envisioning being able to hang out on the bar to see my favorite band and rock the eff out, but if yuppy jerk-os are going to screw that up...I'd like to prepare for it :-) haha. I've been up on the bar with lots of other massive fans for them before, so I'll always have that happy moment to remember, even if I don't get to do it again.

The wife and I are doing more concerts/festivals so we are doing GA for everything to max out our dollars! I honestly was jealous of VIP last year. They had this killer setup on the concrete stage of Sawyer point that looked cool as hell. Like an open bar where you could still watch the band. I would probably do that. I can’t speak about anything else but if you can drop the cash without maxing the credit card, treat yourself!

I went VIP the last two years and am looking to buy tickets again for this year. There are a few sets of patio furniture near the main stage with a *limited* view of the stage. I would recommend the back of the general viewing area if that's what you're looking for. There are plenty of lockers to go around. Never had issues there. The people in the front few rows of VIP are there to watch the show. Not too much talking there. However, towards the back and near the bars are people who are completely uninterested in bands and are just there to hang out. There are many people there to just hang out and yell over the bands playing. In regards to food, hours are still very limited. I think they only put food our a couple of times a day for 30 min to an hour at a time. However, the VIP area by the second stage had snacks available at different points. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I can’t speak about anything else but if you can drop the cash without maxing the credit card, treat yourself! Yeah, we just decided to put most of our annual concert budget to this fest rather than pay to go see each of a lot of the bands individually. We agreed no other shows this year. Although I'm still steamed about Incubus (which is my favorite band) playing in my home town, Cbus, on the Friday of the festival. If it were any other night, we would have ALSO gone to see them again. That bar where you can watch from sounds pretty great. Do you happen to know if there is any space where we could plop a blanket down and casually watch some of them? Not headliners, but lower card? (EDIT TO SAY: I just read brb's post which answered this question) The main reason we went ahead with VIP, though, was because we have an 18 month old. We decided it would be a lot of fun to have a weekend with the grandparents in Cinci. Do some fun stuff in the mornings, grandma and grandpa can babysit while we go to the festival. We needed that freedom to be able to come and go as we pleased without fearing having a terrible spot later in the day. Even if the loud talkers are bad, I'll just keep reminding myself that the VIP was the way we needed to do it to make it work. Maybe that will help me mentally block them out

We intend to be in the front of the viewing area for the bands we care the most about...so that's good to know that at least people up close are respectful! Maybe we'll forego the VIP viewing areas for the lower card stuff to do a blanket plop. We definitely won't be there early enough to get in the patio furniture. We plan to be in later, and possibly even have to be in and out. My parents will be babysitting our 18 month old while we're there, so we may miss out on some festival experience...but we may have to leave at times there aren't bands we're super interested in just to help them out. Are the lockers the kind you have to put quarters into? Or are they free? Are the charging stations just inside each locker? So you can plop your phone in there to let it charge for a while and walk around? Or are they the kind you kind of want to babysit your phone because it sits out in the open? Glad to know about the food. We are always prepared for low sugar incidents either way, but we'll be sure not to rely on there being food available regularly. Thanks again!!

Hey, we're flying in from out of state to attend for 2018, but only going for 2 days - so debating if it's worth spending the money for VIP...does anyone know if the VIP section gets you right up front of the stage and if there is plenty of room? And if so, do you still have to show up super early (1-2 hours before the band you want to see), to be able to be in that VIP front section to be that close? We aren't too thrilled about spending $900 for just 2 days, but we also aren't crazy about travelling all that way only to have to wait 2 hours, & being stuck way back, being smooshed with 15,000 other people in the middle of a stampede and not able to see the bands, in GA...thoughts and input are greatly appreciated!

VIP will definitely get you up front, but it sort of depends on the band whether or not you can stroll in or have to wait. I’ve never done VIP, but I can tell you it never looks like it’s completely jam packed

Honestly, the GA for all artists except the last 2 of the night you can get about 20 rows back without much effort. If you want first 5 rows or so, yes, you will have to camp out. I rolled into Death Cab for Cutie last year right when they came on stage and walked right behind the VIP section so i was about the equivalent to 20 rows back which

Hey guys, I've also been on the fence about VIP...I've called the festival & asked if the crowd is split between GA & VIP & they said no. I'm picturing a Coachella crowd where VIP is 100ft in front of GA. I was told that even if I have GA I could be front row for some artists. I'm fine camping out for some bands.
Can anyone confirm if you can be front row with GA or MUST have VIP? Also can VIP be upgraded on site?
Thanks & see you all there!

As long as it is still the same, the VIP area was only on the right side of the stage if your are facing it. So, yes you could still have similar views from GA. However, I did GA for the four years before and can say that if you want to be up front and still bounce between stages, VIP is the easiest way to make it happen. I am not one to try and fight towards the front in GA so I always just took what I could get. I felt the VIP was well worth the money and will probably not do GA again. The cheap drinks and decent drinks were just a bonus.
